The context in this article is that of sticking together, a collective, so I'm going with the second term; though I'm guessing the first bit about peace and stone, maybe to imply calm and solid, might be somewhere in that speech as well. Either way, my guess is that one such as 熊兄弟 would only speak of pomegranates in order to 蚀 (nibble away, eat into, erode).
